Are You a Good Candidate for a Heart Transplant?

I wonder how people survive with Heart Surgery transplant. I heard of a child who had a heart transplant at an early age because of a congenital heart failure, they had to perform heart surgery on her. The surgeons said that on her 15th birthday she needs to have another heart transplant to avoid complications. Does it mean that as you grow older your condition changes whether you’re a good candidate for heart transplant or not.

What are the considerations in having a heart transplant anyway? They say that before you can have a heart transplant; think first about what is probable to happen if you do get a new heart. This depends on your physical health, your mental health, and your capability to maintain the transplant medicines you will need. The first visit to a transplant center can be stressful, wondering if a human heart is available for you; this appointment can be arranged by your doctor, a nurse, or a social worker. They have to check your physical and mental health, there may be other tests and examinations that the transplant team may need to perform. In evaluating your mental health – you may need to see a social worker or psychologist to make sure that you do not have alcohol or drug addiction and emotional problems that may interfere with your health. And lastly, you will have to see your insurance specialist, to assess your insurance to make sure you have enough monetary support for treatment and medication after transplant.
